Background of the Study
Masquerade festivals have been an integral part of cultural expression in Nsukka, symbolizing the convergence of art, spirituality, and communal identity. Traditionally, these festivals serve as rites of passage and vehicles for social control, where masks represent ancestral spirits and cultural ideals (Okonkwo, 2023). In modern society, however, the relevance of masquerade festivals is increasingly questioned as urbanization, modernization, and external cultural influences reshape community values. While some view these festivals as outdated, others argue that they provide a vital connection to cultural roots and contribute to community cohesion (Amadi, 2024). Recent studies have noted a resurgence in interest among younger generations, who reinterpret these traditions in innovative ways (Nwosu, 2025). The current investigation evaluates whether masquerade festivals continue to hold cultural significance in modern Nsukka, examining their role in reinforcing cultural identity and social norms. The study draws on qualitative data from participants, cultural custodians, and festival organizers to assess the dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity (Eze, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Modernization in Nsukka has led to debates regarding the relevance of masquerade festivals, with some community members perceiving them as archaic (Chukwu, 2023). The commercialization and altered presentation of these festivals may diminish their traditional cultural significance, causing concern among cultural custodians. This tension between preserving tradition and embracing modernity has resulted in inconsistent festival practices and a loss of cultural authenticity. The study seeks to identify these challenges and recommend strategies for sustaining the relevance of masquerade festivals in a modern context (Okonkwo, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To evaluate the contemporary significance of masquerade festivals.
2. To identify challenges facing traditional festival practices.
3. To propose measures for revitalizing masquerade festivals in modern society.
Research Questions:
1. How relevant are masquerade festivals to modern Nsukka society?
2. What challenges affect the authenticity of these festivals?
3. How can festival practices be adapted for contemporary audiences?
Research Hypotheses:
1. H1: Modern influences reduce the cultural authenticity of masquerade festivals.
2. H2: Revitalized practices can enhance festival relevance.
3. H3: Community engagement positively influences festival sustainability.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers insights into preserving cultural heritage amid modernization. The findings will assist cultural leaders and event organizers in adapting masquerade festivals to maintain cultural integrity while engaging modern audiences (Amadi, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the relevance of masquerade festivals in modern Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, focusing on traditional practices and contemporary adaptations.
